The amazing 2 mile sandy beach is backed by a pebble ridge, with Northam Burrows Country Park accessible at one end this beach offers the best of both sand rock pools and nature.
Westward Ho!, also known as ‘Golden Bay’, has once again been awarded a Blue Flag award. RNLI Lifeguard service is available from May to September and the beach is popular with windsurfers surfers and swimmers.
Dogs are permitted at the Northam Burrows end all year round but the village end is restricted from May – September, which is a 10 minute walk from Black Sea Horse. There is ample car parking and disabled parking close to the beach.
The wonderful surf that runs on to Westward Ho! draws surfers from miles around and with designated surfing areas the beach caters for every activity. Learn to surf with the North Devon Surf School for a fantastic experience with friends or family. The surf is also home to wild sea bass attracting anglers from all over the country. Equipment for bathing surfing and angling is readily available from local outlets.
The beach is adjacent to the South West Coast Path and is near to the picturesque villages of Appledore and Clovelly, and the ancient port of Bideford. Both Bideford and Barnstaple are local market towns offering you all the amenities you need.
The Royal North Devon Golf Club is within walking distance of Black Sea Horse. Founded in 1864, it is the oldest golf course in the country and is regarded as the St.Andrews of the South. The golf course is as tough as any of the UK’s more famous links layouts and has recently been placed in Golf World’s top 100 courses in the world that a golfer ” must play ” . The club has a restaurant and pro shop and visitors are always most welcome.
There are a number of local gardens to visit including RHS Rosemoor and Castle Hill Gardens near Barnstaple. Darlington Crystal & Arlington Court are other great days out that are worth a visit.
Local, all-weather attractions for families include The Milky Way Adventure Park , Exmoor Zoo , Watermouth Castle & Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park. and the Big Sheep at Bideford.
